The company brought this culture of efficiency to its seagoing ship design, along with its policy of consistency. While most cruise brands generate a series of new classes, Viking’s river and seagoing vessels are virtually identical to one another. Harri Kulovaara, executive vice president of maritime and newbuilding for Royal Caribbean Cruises, has led the design and construction of highly innovative ships for all the company’s brands. He was involved with the creation of the central promenade on Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships and most recently worked on Azamara Club Cruises’ Azamara Pursuit and Celebrity Edge. Kulovaara credits the company’s cutting-edge virtual reality and computer modeling tools, which allow teams to quickly visualize new features and how they will impact the projected ship design as a whole.

In a tail-wags-the-dog scenario, seagoing ship design is drawing inspiration from European river cruising, which has creatively addressed issues of efficiency and optimal use of space because of the constraints on ship size. While details on the ship are still light, expect it to resemble sibling ships MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa.
A major feature of the futuristic-looking ship is the Sky Lounge, an innovative space designed to extend outward, maximizing the interior while offering passengers a unique experience. The lounge can also be retracted back into the vessel’s hull, minimizing wind resistance. Meyer Werft has a name to uphold when it comes to design and innovation as the world’s biggest cruise ship builder.
The cruise ship will also likely visit the cruise line’s marine reserve in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay. Water is the theme of the ship and it will have the largest cruise ship swimming pool as well as an insane waterpark with six water slides on the top deck. While Perfect Day at CocoCay features amenities like waterslides and a wave pool, Perfect Day at Lelepa will provide a more tranquil, traditional beach day for visitors. In addition, it will be the world’s first private cruise destination to achieve carbon neutrality, and all energy consumed on the island will be generated from renewable resources. While Royal Caribbean currently has orders in place for three Icon Class cruise ships and Utopia of the Seas, the coming years may see more orders placed for new cruise ships.
Several months ago, Disney Cruise Line announced that they had purchased the unfinished Global Dream after the parent company of the cruise ship went bankrupt. If there was one future cruise ship that you should sail on, Icon of the Seas should be the one. While the cruise ship will be similar to the Oasis class with a Central Park in the middle and a split aft, it will be an experience unlike any other and a class of its own.
